Saving you money: Homemade laundry detergent

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- There are some items you'd rather not live without, like laundry detergent.

To avoid paying so much for a product many people go through like water, a Georgia mom of 2 is sharing her homemade recipe.

"I thought it would be a pain to put together," Ashlei Boatright explains, "so I just did it. I made my own laundry detergent and it was easy. Didn't take long at all!"

For just 7-dollars, Ashlei stirred up 5 gallons of laundry detergent that's lasted her nearly a year.

Watch her story on GMJ this morning (Thursday 11/01/12) at 6:25 a.m. to see how Ashlei manages to find the time to make her home-made laundry with 4-year-old Jonah and 2-year-old Mason running around.

Want to try her recipe?  She wrote it down for us:

1 cup Borax
1 cup Washing Soda
1 bar laundry soap
5 gallons of water

Grate (yes, with a cheese grater) the whole bar of laundry soap into a medium pot, cover with water, heat over medium/high heat, stirring often until soap is dissolved.

While soap is cooking on stove, prepare other ingredients. Put borax and washing soda in bucket. Start adding warm water and stirring to dissolved powders. When soap is completely dissolved, pour into bucket. Mix and add water to make 5 gallons.

The whole process takes less than 30 minutes and makes your whole house smell great while the soap is "cooking"!

**I have made it this basic way and I have also made a batch with a laundry scent booster. For that batch I used a small bottle of Purex scent crystals and I just dissolved them with the soap on the stove. I prefer just making it the basic way and adding my scent boosters (Gain Fireworks) to the loads that I want to smell extra good.
