Mayor Alvin Brown’s Learn2Earn Experience

I was proud and energized to be an instructor with
Mayor Alvin Brown’s Learn2Earn Experience.
L2E was a two week academic and social experience
promoting the value of higher education.

An immersion program attended by over 200 selected
high school students throughout Duval County Public
Schools, many of whom are seeking to be the first in
their family to go to college.

Opening their academic doors were Jacksonville
University and the University of North Florida.
During these engaging weeks students were provided
the opportunity to experience firsthand college life
experiences. Students lived in the dorms with their
chaperones, learned and participated in educational,
cultural and social events just as traditional college

The Learn2Earn curriculum included:
My College Self, Career Research, Finding the Right Major,
Cash for College and College Fit and Selection.
A special week long component provide by
William Jackson, M.Ed., Blogger with My Quest To Teach
(, educator with Duval County Public
Schools and Professor with Edward Waters College
(Educational Technology) the oldest HBCU in Florida.

Mr. Jackson provided sessions in Social Media Safety,
Cyberbullying/Bullying, Sexting/Texting and Internet
Accountability. Mr. Jackson provided cash prizes to
students for their participation in question and answer
sessions and door prizes of three (3) desktop computers
to students for their involvement and participation during
the Social Media components. It is planned for next year
to expand by offering more computers to students that
need technology that are participating in the
Learn2Earn Experience.

The City of Jacksonville partnering with Co'Relous Bryant
of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund
(, started the week off
with engaging and entertaining ice breakers that helped
the students dispel any homesickness, shyness, self doubt
and helped form friendships that will extend beyond the
summer Learn2Earn Experience of 2012.

Partnerships were established with Take Stock In Children
and Teach for America provided an empowering experience
for the students. The importance of this program is the reality
that 6 in 10 jobs in Florida will require post-secondary training
by 2018 if not earlier (Jacksonville Public Education Fund).

Mayor Alvin Brown and the Learn2Earn Experience,
proactive in its efforts to prepare students now with a mindset
of higher education in their future educational plans.

“Our goal is to give students all the tools and resources to be
successful. We want to guide them to make wise choices that
will empower them to overcome any obstacle.” “Learn2Earn is
a program to build role models with a focus on Jacksonville’s
future so that we will have the best-educated workforce to
compete in the 21st Century global economy” Mayor Brown 2012.
