Photo Gallery | Memorial Day 2012: Army Lieutenant Ryan Timoney

Thomas Campbell, a Scottish poet (1777-1844), commented: "The patriot's blood is the seed of Freedom's tree."

The Miller on Sports team wishes you and your family a very safe and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.   While many of us will enjoy the beaches and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, others will travel the congested roads to visit family and friends.  Regardless of your plans and events, please take the time to remember and honor our fallen troops and pray for our military men and women, especially our dear friend Army Lieutenant Ryan Timoney, a First Coast resident, who is fighting for his life after being hit by a suicide bomber on Sunday, May 20, 2012, in Afghanistan.

Initially, after being stabilized in Afghanistan, Timoney was transported to a military hospital in Germany.  On Friday, May 25th, he was flown to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, for specialized treatment.  On Saturday, May 26th, Timoney's parents and brother will fly to Washington, D.C., to see him.  For additional information about Timoney's ordeal, visit First Coast News.

"We come, not to mourn our . . . soldiers, but to praise them."  - Francis A. Walker, American Economist, 1840-1897.

Here are a few noteworthy quotes that I found to be thought-provoking for the Memorial Day weekend:

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty." – John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963, 35th President of the United States from 1961 until his assassination on November 22, 1963  (Inaugural Address, Friday, January 20, 1961).

"We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."  - Abraham Lincoln, 1809-1865, 16th President of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in April 1865 (Gettysburg Address, 1863).

"All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word:  freedom; justice; honor; duty; mercy; hope." – Sir Winston Churchill, 1874-1965, British Statesman.

"The freedom of thought and action we Americans enjoy today seems as natural as the air we breathe.  But there is a danger we may take this freedom for granted.  We must never forget it was bought for us at a great price.  The brave and resourceful Americans whose sacrifices gained our Independence and preserved it for more than 200 years against formidable foes have set an example of unflinching loyalty to the ideal of liberty and justice for all."  -  Ronald Reagan, 1911-2004, 40th President of the United States from 1981-1989.

"The things that the flag stands for were created by the experiences of a great people.  Everything that it stands for was written by their lives.  The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history." – Woodrow Wilson, 1856-1924, 28th President of the United States from 1913-1921.
