Even Monday's Rain Can't Squelch Raging Wildfires

Even Monday's Rain Can't Squelch Raging Wildfires

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Parts of the First Coast got some much-needed rain Monday, but the Division of Forestry said that even this wet weather hasn't been able to tame the wildfires raging in several counties.

According to DOF spokesperson Annaleasa Winter, the heaviest rain hit in areas, like Southside and Mandarin, that don't have any fires burning.

In fact, Winter said it's possible that lightning strikes from the storms coming though the area Monday may have started some new fires.

DOF investigators believe the lightning is to blame for fires along County Road 209 and near the Dee Dot Ranch on the Southside.

Smoky Skies: Weather Pattern to Be Similar for the Weekend

Smoky Skies: Weather Pattern to Be Similar for the Weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Smoke is covering much of the First Coast like a blanket, and it's coming from all around.

Dozens of fires are burning north, west and south of Jacksonville.

Light, variable winds all morning, combined with high pressure sitting right over Jacksonville, forced smoke from all around over the city and left it nowhere to go, according to meteorologist Mike Prangley.

The seabreeze kicked in this afternoon, forcing the smoke back to the west and clearing the air in Jacksonville,

Chief Meteorologist Tim Deegan said the pattern that caused today's situation will be in place again Saturday -- smoke hovering in the morning, clearing in the afternoon -- and similar, if a bit worse, Sunday.

As next week begins, Deegan said a mixed blessing is in store.

Lightning Sparks Fire at Home near Downtown Jacksonville

Lightning Sparks Fire at Home near Downtown Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Lightning struck a building with two apartments inside as well as a power pole, sparking a fire in the homes and knocking down powerlines.

The fire broke out in the 700 block of Eaverson Street this afternoon but was brought under control in less than 10 minutes, officials said.

Tashella Smith, who lived there with her son, said she went to the doctor and came home to a house on fire. It is a complete loss.

And this is not the first time her house has caught on fire. "December 6, 2006, different house, different apartment, same me."

Firefighters saw smoke coming from roof when they arrived on the scene, said Tom Francis, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue spokesperson.

The fire was under control in less than 10 minutes.
