Morning Miller On Sports: BLACKMON JOINS JAGS - April 27, 2012 | Sports & Recreation
You Should Know – In last night’s first round of the NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to No. 5 and drafted former Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon. The Jags swapped first-round picks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and gave up this year’s fourth-rounder in the trade. According to Jaguars general manager Gene Smith, they kept the lines of communication open with every NFL team, but only talked to the Bucs during the draft. On Blackmon, Jags head coach Mike Mularkey said, “He’s got an edge to him. He’s one of these guys that doesn’t think he can be covered.” Smith added, “I think we’ve improved since we’ve been here with the addition of our free agents. Today was a great addition to our football team.”
Jaguars Bite of the Day – Sweet story about Justin Blackmon’s friendship with a leukemia victim. Olivia Hamilton, 11, and Blackmon met at a Coaches vs. Cancer basketball game over a year ago. “I think it’s a great relationship because she’s an easy person to get along with,” Blackmon said.
College Nugget – Former Illinois and Parker High graduate A.J. Jenkins was chosen in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers last night. Jenkins, a wide receiver, had risen on most draft boards over the past two weeks. Taken with the 30th overall pick, he joins wide receivers Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree. Last season, Jenkins had 90 catches for 1,276 yards and eight touchdowns.
Broadcasting Note – ESPN’s Chris Berman felt like yelling to amp himself (and you) up for the draft coverage.
Strange Thought of the Day – If Justin Blackmon struggles, will there be references made to R. Jay Soward, Reggie Williams and Matt Jones?
Tweet of the last 24 hours – @PeterBurnsRadio (Peter Burns, radio host for Fox Sports Radio) “#Jaguars now have Laurent Robinson & Justin Blackmon with Blaine Gabbert throwing. Like buying Lexus’s and parking at an apartment complex.”
Stat(s) of the Day – Justin Blackmon and Michael Crabtree are the only college players to win the Fred Biletnikoff Award, which is awarded to the best college receiver, more than once. Both won it twice in back-to-back seasons. Over the past two seasons at Oklahoma State, Blackmon, the winner of the Biletnikoff in 2010 and 2011, compiled 3,304 receiving yards and 38 TDs.
Link of the Day – NFL.com has a second-round mock draft to prepare you for tonight.
Video of the Day – Did you know NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and former South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram have a secret handshake?
Question of the Day – Will the other Jacksonville receivers treat Justin Blackmon like a rookie?
