Morning Miller On Sports - April 12, 2012 | Sports & Recreation
Jacksonville Giants Basketball – The ABA Jacksonville Giants face the San Diego SOL tonight in St. Petersburg, FL. This game will determine which of these two teams will face-off against the South Carolina Warriors in the ABA National Basketball Championship starting Friday night.. Good luck Giants!
You Should Know – The NCAA placed Baylor on three years of probation Wednesday because of impermissible phone calls and text messages. All of the penalties against both the men’s and women’s basketball programs were proposed by the school. The violations were announced less than one week after the Baylor Lady Bears won the national championship and went 40-0. The NCAA reviewed nearly 900,000 phone calls and 738 texts. Along with the probation, men’s coach Scott Drew failed to monitor his program and is suspended for the first two games of the Big 12 schedule.
Jaguars Bite of the Day – The Jacksonville Jaguars have expressed interest in being on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” Jags spokesman Dan Edwards, via the Florida Times-Union, said, “We did express interest, and at this point we don’t know what HBO’s plans are.” The network wanted to have the Denver Broncos as the featured team, but were denied. FOXSports.com’s Adam Schein, who first reported the story, was told that Jets coach Rex Ryan does not want his team to be covered again. New York was on Hard Knocks when it last aired in 2010. HBO is also considering the Ravens and 49ers.
College Nugget – “Signing Day Special” last night on ESPNU highlighted big-time recruits signing with major college basketball programs. Kentucky landed 6-foot-10 center Nerlens Noel, and UCLA snagged Shabazz Muhammad. Noel, who had a “UK” design shaved into the back of his head, picked the Wildcats over Georgetown and Syracuse. Most thought Muhammad would join John Calipari and the Cats, but he chose the UCLA Bruins instead of Kentucky and Duke.
Broadcasting Note – The University of Louisville’s football coach Charlie Strong is apparently upset at the local media’s intense coverage of the Louisville basketball team and its Final Four run. He has placed a ban on local media covering the Cardinals football team. Strong will hold a press conference today on the subject.
Strange Thought of the Day – After four years at Arkansas, is it possible that Bobby Petrino wanted to move on from that job?
Tweet of the last 24 hours – @LBSports (Larry Brown, founder of the blog Larry Brown Sports) “Bobby Petrino made over 300 calls and exchanged 4300 texts to Jessica Dorrell from a university-issued phone. How dumb can you be?”
Stat(s) of the Day – Even without Kobe Bryant for a third consecutive game, the Lakers pulled off a 14-point win over the San Antonio Spurs. Los Angeles’ Andrew Bynum dominated the paint with 30 rebounds. He’s the first player with a 30-rebound game since Minnesota’s Kevin Love did it two years ago.
Link of the Day – From the Dallas Morning News, a reporter “heard from a lot of [high school] coaches who called him [Bobby Petrino] sneaky and untrustworthy.”
Video of the Day – It’s the NHL playoffs! In the opening game of their series, the Nashville Predators beat the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2. The Predators’ Shea Weber punched Henrik Zetterberg in the back of the head and then slammed his face into the boards.
Question of the Day – If New York Jets coach Rex Ryan wants to stay out of the limelight, does this mean Tim Tebow has changed Ryan?
