The last several weeks my mind has been marinated by
the voices of Nikki Giovanni, Al Letson, the passionate
and at times controversial words of Malcolm X.
Not the Malcolm that called Whites, blue or brown eyed
devils, but the Malcolm that came back from the pilgrimage
to Mecca (the Hajj) believed in the ability of men to be
brothers. To respect each other and be at peace in this
world. Everyone deserves a second chance to change
the world in a positive direction.

Fla. Lawmakers Reach Deal on College Tuition

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida lawmakers are signing off on a plan to raise college tuition.

House and Senate budget negotiators on Wednesday have agreed to raise tuition by 5 percent for students who attend one of Florida's 28 state colleges.

Legislators would not order a tuition hike for the state's 11 universities.

But the budget anticipates the Board of Governors will approve increases of 15 percent for all or most universities. That's the maximum the board can approve on its own.

Gov. Rick Scott says he is opposed to tuition hikes and he did not recommend any this year.

The Republican-controlled Legislature is also considering a separate bill that would allow the state's two major research universities - University of Florida and Florida State University - to have wide power to set tuition.

Beverly McMillan: Teacher of the Week

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- 44 years.

That's how long Beverly McMillan's been teaching -- at the same Jacksonville school.

That's why leaving it is so surreal.

Mrs. McMillan's retiring from St. Pius V Catholic School, and from teaching altogether, in May.

Check out the Good Morning Jacksonville's story about Mrs. McMillan on this webpage and you'll see what has made her so loved among hundreds of students and former students.

"I'm here because I love the children," Mrs. McMillan says with a quiet smile.

"I want them to be productive citizens, and in order to be productive you need to talk with them, you need to love them, give them lots of hugs and know whats going on so you can do something outside to change something on the inside."

The entire First Coast News team congratulates Beverly McMillan.
