Mayor Alvin Brown has released this statement on today’s NFL owners’ vote regarding the Jacksonville Jaguars:

“As mayor, I welcome Mr. Khan to Jacksonville and encourage all of our residents and Jaguars fans to do the same. Mr. Khan’s stated commitment to keeping our team in Jacksonville has done so much to energize the Jaguars’ fan base and create a tremendous sense of optimism about the future of the team.

Mayor Calls On Citizens to Give One Hour a Week to Mentor Jacksonville Students

 

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown announced today the launch of the Mayor’s Mentors, a public-private partnership to train and place 500 new school-based mentors with Duval County Public School students by April 1 at no cost to taxpayers.  The Mayor’s goal is to recruit, train and match mentors with Duval County Public School students to increase on-time, next grade promotion and graduation rates. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Wayne Weaver suggested new Jaguars owner Shahid Khan won't actually move to Jacksonville, but the mayor has another plan.

"I want him to invest in downtown," said Brown this morning on Good Morning Jacksonville.  "You know what he can do?  Build the first home downtown," he told Phil Amato and Joy Purdy.

Why did Herman Cain Really Get a Secret Service Detail?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- During his stop on the First Coast, GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain had a few more people in his entourage: tSecret Service.

Cain requested their protection a little more than a week ago, but denied reports that it was because the media had been too aggressive. "It's not that you are all too scary! The media doesn't scare me, no," he said.

Cain's campaign requested a Secret Service detail after a stop in New Hampshire that left the candidate shaken.

"There were some things that quite frankly made us feel a little uncomfortable, so we're glad that the request was approved," he said.
