Working families thankful for Thanksgiving turkey | News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Across from EverBank Field, a long line formed for a little help to make the Thanksgiving complete.

Second Harvest, along with volunteers, for the third year handed out frozen turkeys and some extras to nearly 2,000 families who qualified.

"I have five children and my husband is not making as much anymore because I guess the way the economy is going," said Melanie Balfor while waiting in line along with her three year-old son.

Melanie Carr stood nearby also waiting her turn for some Thanksgiving groceries. 

"I learned to get by on a lot less and be a lot more frugal," said Carr, who looked forward to providing for her family on Thanksgiving.

Bruce Ganger with Second Harvest said the need for help, especially among working families, shows no signs of getting better.

"We know 40 percent of the people who are coming to us directly or through member agencies are working families and that number continues to grow," said Ganger.

The Balfor family was thankful for extra help this Thanksgiving.

"My children are going to have a nice Thanksgiving now and I am grateful for that," she said.
