Hemming Plaza hosts picnic to promote park traffic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hemming Plaza is at a crossroads on what needs to happen to breathe new life into a Downtown landmark.

Downtown Vision, a nonprofit committed to promoting downtown,  hosted a "picnic in the plaza" on Friday to attract people to the park that fronts City Hall.

Fun and games, along with food donated by neighboring restaurants, attracted some workers to park that draws the homeless.

"The challenges that we have and are trying to address are higher levels of cleanliness and safety," said Terry Lorince, Executive Director of Downtown Vision.

"This park is doable. We will turn around Hemming Plaza," she said.

The city since January has been looking at ways to make the plaza a safer and more desirable destination for Downtown workers and visitors.

A council committee has discussed removing benches and tables to reduce the traffic of people who frequently spend hours a day in the park.

Another idea being floated is getting information on the potential of hiring a vendor who would manage and plan park events. That proposal is still in its early stages.
