NFL Monitoring Case of Jaguars' DT Knighton Eye Injury
News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The severity of an eye injury suffered by Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton is unknown, after an incident over the weekend forced him to have surgery.

Meanwhile, the NFL's chief spokesman, Greg Aiello, tells First Coast News the league will "monitor" the situation.

"We would monitor something like that and followup if necessary," Aiello said.

Jaguars spokesman Dan Edwards previously said the team was gathering information about what happened. Aiello said it's standard for the team to take the lead at this point.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that the incident happened near Pure Nightclub in Jacksonville. But security staff there were unaware of the incident when asked about it late Sunday. Multiple messages left for the manager have not been returned.

When asked if the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating any incident involving Knighton or Pure, spokeman Shannon Hartley said, "I am unaware of any investigations into the incident at this time."

"I assume if Mr. Knighton was the victim of a crime and felt that police intervention was necessary that he or his representatives would requested our involvement," Hartley replied in an e-mail.

A message and email left with Knighton's agent were not immediately returned.

Jaguars spokesman Dan Edwards released a four-sentence statement: "Terrance Knighton was involved in an incident early Sunday morning in which he sustained an eye injury. He has undergone surgery at Baptist Medical Center and is recovering. We are in the process of gathering information about what happened and are not able to further comment at this time. Our concern and our focus is on Terrance and his health and recovery."
