The Jacksonville Giants, Jacksonville’s only professional basketball team, traveled to South Holland, Illinois, this week to take on the #4 ranked Chicago Steam in the final game of the ABA quarterfinals. The Chicago Steam took off from there keeping the game a close one.  The Giants held the lead until the last 2 minutes of the game when it appeared that the Steam had a slight chance at a comeback. Chicago rallied to tie the game and led the Giants by one until Currye Todd sank a 3-pointer and secured the win by hitting 4 free throws in the final minutes of the game. The Steam kept the game rolling and played hard until the end.  Anthony Lumpkin, the team captain, was the high scorer in the game with 18 points all scored in the first half.  The Giants truly secured this win with 17 out of 21 attempted free throws at the end of the third quarter and numerous offensive rebounds.  The following players also significantly contributed to the Giants’ win:  Lamar Sanders, 13 points, and Jermaine Bell, Anthony Jackson and Renaldo Norman, all with 12 points each.

A final score of 102-99 gave the Giants an enormous win and locked in an appearance in the ABA Final Four in St. Petersburg, Florida, starting April 9th.  This gives the Jacksonville Giants their second consecutive Final Four showing in the team’s two-year existence. The team has gone 22-3 in their second season and is prepared to bring the heat to the ABA Finals in the upcoming week.

Head Coach Kevin Waters stated, “I am so proud that our team has reached the ABA Final Four two years straight.  The competition will be even tougher in St. Petersburg.  There is no time to celebrate this win.  Our team will begin training immediately upon our arrival in Jacksonville.”

Coach Waters will be interviewed LIVE on-air by radio host Richard Miller (The Voice of the JacksonvilleGiants) this Monday on AM1600 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m.  Copies of this audio will be available upon request.

ABOUT THE GIANTS AND THE ABA 3-D RULE

The Giants, directed by Head Coach Kevin Waters, was established as a fast-breaking energetic team meant to take advantage of the ABA's 3-D rule.  The 3-D rule allows the team that steals its opponent's ball before half court to add one point to its point score.  For example:  If the stealing team makes a two point shot it actually counts as three points on the scoreboard.  When the 3-D rule is in effect and a player is fouled, that player has the opportunity at three foul shots instead of the normal two.
