The Morning Miller On Sports For March 7, 2012

Question of the Day – Would you like to see long-time Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis back in Jacksonville for 2012?

Jacksonville Giants Giants player A.J. Stewart smashes the backboard in the Giants win over the Florida Makos at Kings Bay Naval Base.  The score was 77 to 49 when this happened and without a replacement the game was called over.  Also,  the ABA Jacksonville Giants will host the 2012 ABA Southeastern Regional Playoff games March 17th and 18th.  The final round will be played at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Sunday March 18th.  Call 355-6531 for more information.

Jaguars Bite of the Day – Since the Jags and Colts are in the same division – the AFC South, I figured this Colts news was worthy of this column.  On Tuesday night, ESPN reported that Indianapolis would part with veteran quarterback Peyton Manning.  A joint press conference will be held today in Indianapolis.  Manning, a four-time NFL MVP, can sign with another NFL team once the Colts formally release him.  It’s expected that the addition of Manning can make one lucky team an immediate playoff contender.

You Should Know – For the second time in the last four years, Florida State basketball coach Leonard Hamilton was named the ACC Coach of the Year.  In a press release from the school, the Seminoles have won 21 games while playing the nation’s 10th-toughest schedule.  Hamilton, Coach of the Year in 2009, has led the Noles to their third straight season of being the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament.  Hamilton stated, “This is not an award for Leonard Hamilton; rather it is an award that touts the hard work and accomplishments of our staff and players.”  Florida State plays the winner of Georgia Tech-Miami on Friday.

College Football Nugget – About two months after Brent Pease became the Florida Gators offensive coordinator, his contract details were released.  Because of the Freedom of Information Act, it’s now known that Pease signed a three-year deal worth $490,000 annually.  He also has a $100,000 signing bonus.  New offensive line coach Tim Davis agreed to one year and $275,000.  Jeff Dillman, the director of strength and conditioning, inked a two-year contract for a total of $430,000.

Broadcasting Note – The Florida Gators men’s basketball team plays the winner of Alabama-South Carolina 3:30 p.m. on Friday.  Florida State has the winner of Georgia Tech-Miami Friday at 9 p.m.  The Gators can be seen on the SEC Network, and the Noles will be on ESPN2.

Strange Thought of the Day – What if Peyton Manning decides to retire?

Tweet of the last 24 hours – @bkravitz (Bob Kravitz, The Indianapolis Star columnist) “Saw two little neighbor kids throwing a football around today, both wearing #18 jerseys.  Kind of heart-breaking, in a way.”

Stat(s) of the Day – On Tuesday, Randy Moss had a workout with the New Orleans Saints.  The 35-year-old has two other meetings next week with NFL teams.  Moss sat out the 2011 season.  In 2010, he played for New England, Minnesota and Tennessee.

Link of the Day – It’s a CBS Sports list of the top-30 NFL free agents.  Free agency begins on Tuesday, March 13.

Video of the Day – In a charity match, Rory McIlroy, the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer, won a point off Maria Sharapova.  McIlroy briefly came down from the stands and subbed in for his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.
