The Morning Miller On Sports For March 1, 2012

You Should Know – The NFL preseason will kick off with the annual Hall of Fame game on August 5.  The Arizona Cardinals are slated to play the New Orleans Saints.  Last year’s Hall of Fame matchup was canceled because of the lockout.  The NFL Network will have this year’s coverage.  It’s only 157 days away, football fans.

Jaguars Bite of the Day – Jacksonville guard Will Rackley, through the team’s website, said missing last off-season left him with little time to prepare for the professional game.  He now knows what to expect.  Additionally, there’s an off-season conditioning program in place.  Rackley told Jaguars.com senior writer John Oesher, “I just want to be focused for next season, and I’m definitely excited.”  Rackley, drafted out of Lehigh in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, spoke about “settling down, trusting yourself and understanding the technique.”  He added, “When you don’t trust yourself, you can’t go 100 percent.  The guys in this league are so good that if you’re one step behind you get beat.”

College Football Nugget – The Miami Hurricanes posted their pre-spring depth chart yesterday.  Stephen Morris, who is recovering from back surgery, will miss spring drills.  On the depth chart, Memphis transfer Ryan Williams is listed as the No.1 quarterback.  After him, it’s Gray Crow and Preston Dewey.  Morris, the backup to Jacory Harris last season, is scheduled to address his surgery and off-season availability today.

Broadcasting Note – At a press conference Wednesday, Tiger Woods got a tad irate when golf writer and television analyst Alex Miceli asked him about an excerpt from Hank Haney’s book.

Strange Thought(s) of the Day – This one is really loopy.  Would the New Orleans Saints let Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees walk?

Tweet of the last 24 hours – @MadDogUnleased (Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, sports talk radio host on Sirius XM Radio) “Hank Haney – very like Steve Williams, just trying to make $ off Tiger.  Haney doesn’t have a pot to pee in on his own, so he’ll use Tiger.”

Stat(s) of the Day – The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Wednesday they will be releasing veteran wide receiver Hines Ward.  Drafted by the Steelers in 1998, he has two Super Bowl rings and four Pro Bowl selections.  Ward is Pittsburgh’s all-time leader in catches (1,000), receiving yards (12,083) and receiving touchdowns (85).

Link of the Day – Been wondering why the UCLA basketball program has fallen on tough times?  This Sports Illustrated special report should answer that question.

Video of the Day – Clint Dempsey scored the United States’ lone goal to give the red, white and blue a 1-0 win over Italy.  For the first time in 11 meetings, the U.S. recorded a victory.

Question of the Day – Jaguars general manager Gene Smith recently told the Florida Times-Union that this year’s free agency won’t be like the last.  How many football fans are still out there who don’t know Smith prefers to build through the draft?

Jacksonville Giants Basketball – The Jacksonville Giants will host the Southeastern Regional Playoffs of the American Basketball Association (ABA) the weekend of March 17th.  For more information visit http://www.jacksonvillegiants.com or call 904-355-6531.
