"The Voice" Winner Javier Colon to Perform Friday Night | News
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- You've seen him on the hit NBC show "The Voice" and now this is the chance for folks on the First Coast to see Javier Colon up close and personal.
The winner of the show's inaugural season will serenade showgoers with songs from his "Come Through For You" album, which he released back in November, at a concert at the Florida Theater on Friday night.
It's been a while since Colon was in Jacksonville, but he's no stranger to the area. In fact, Colon said he got his start with the Derek Trucks Band, and toured with them for two years.
"I was his lead singer for about a year, almost two years. Right out of college. And I toured with him and he is amazing, and all of his bandmates are well-seasoned," Colon said reverently.
Yes, that's the same band that's now known as the Tedeschi Trucks Band. The music group recently won a Grammy for Best Blues Album.
"It definitely shaped who I was as a musician. I mean to be able to play with that caliber of musicians 180 shows in one year which was the first year it was with them. It definitely impacted me to this day."
But while Colon loved playing with the band, he eventually stepped out on his own. Two record deals later, Colon released a CD under his own label, Javier Colon Music. That was in 2010 and a year later the musician took a chance and opted to take part in "The Voice."
The rest is history. Colon won, and said he immediately went to work on his new album.
"Basically the next week I was in the studio working on an album," Colon described. "That was kind of priority number one."
He made several appearances, including the Rockefeller Christmas Center lighting, and he even sang with Stevie Wonder as part of a tribute to the legendary star at a Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation event.
"It was myself and Michael McDonald and Gary Swecker and Stevie. It was pretty silly. It was awesome," Colon remembered.
So what can you expect at a Javier Colon performance?
"They can expect some of the songs that I performed on the show that might have been some favorites on the show. And I also will be singing some of my songs from my new album. It just kind of depends on what kind of mood I'm in. I like to be flexible and I like to feel what the audience is asking for."
It's not too late to buy tickets to check out Colon's acoustic soul. Ticketmaster is selling tickets for $35-$50, according to its website.
