Coach Mularkey: 'I'm Here to Put a Winner on the Field' | SLIDESHOW | News

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mike Mularkey was introduced this afternoon as the new leader of the Jacksonville Jaguars saying he is encouraged by a team on the brink of success.

Mularkey replaces former head coach Jack Del Rio, who was fired in November, the same day Wayne and Delores Weaver sold announced they were selling their team to Shahid Khan, an Illinois businessman.

"I'm excited about this organization, this facility...," said Mularkey during a 3 p.m. news conference at EverBank Field this afternoon.

He said he had a "good feel for these guys, especially on the defensive side...I'm here to put a winner on the field."

Khan described the search for a new head coach as thorough with a focus on finding "someone we trust and someone we like."

Mularkey said he is in the process of putting his staff together, and mentioned a few times during the news conference that he looks forward to becoming more involved in the community.

"We want fans to be a big part of this organization, said Mularkey.

General Manager Gene Smith led the search for a coach calling it a "very thorough process, intensive process."

Mularkey said that he was attracted to the job because the Jaguars is a team close to breaking through and becoming a winner.

He described the team as very close, on the edge of being a consistent winner. "The goal is to win the Super Bowl," said Mularkey.

He said he was impressed by how close players are and at their
dedication, especially in games that immediately followed Del Rio's
firing.
