Mayor Brown appoints Acting General Counsel | News
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jason R. Gabriel was appointed as Acting General Counsel to lead the City of Jacksonville's legal strategy and initiatives.
The move comes after General Counsel Cindy Laquidara announced April 23 that she will depart the City of Jacksonville to join the Akerman LLP law firm effective July 1, 2014. She has repeatedly been honored for her advice and counsel during more than 15 years with the City.
Since Laquidara's departure will be effective on July 1, 2014, Mayor Brown has filled the vacancy with an Acting General Counsel pursuant to Section 7.205 of the City of Jacksonville Charter. That appointee will be subject to Council confirmation and will serve until July 1, 2015.
Gabriel currently is lead managing attorney of the Government Operations Department of the Office of General Counsel. Gabriel, a graduate of the University of Florida College of Law, is a Board Certified Specialist by the Florida Bar in city, county and local government law.
"Jason Gabriel has displayed the expertise, professionalism and vision necessary to serve as General Counsel," Mayor Brown said. "He has a strong record of providing effective counsel to City Council, the Supervisor of Elections, and various city departments. He has vast expertise in ethics and open government law. Jason also has been on the forefront of our efforts to enhance Jacksonville, such as helping establish and serving as counsel to the Downtown Investment Authority."
The General Counsel represents the Mayor's Office, City Council, Duval County School Board, constitutional officers, and independent authorities.
