This year's Grand Marshal
The Grand Marshal of the parade is, posthumously, "Chief" L. Jerome Spates.  He began his career as a beat cop and became the Jacksonville's first black chief of detectives and then a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office director.  He was born in Brunswick, Georgia, then moved with his family to Jacksonville.  He grew up on the Westside and graduated from New Stanton High School.  He also earned degrees at Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Edward Waters College and Nova University.
