JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Homeowners who have reached a dead end or are frustrated are encouraged to explore their mortgage options as the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America comes to the First Coast.

The largest HUD-certified counseling agency is coming to Jacksonville, which currently holds the distinction of the being the number one ranked city in home foreclosures.

"I had one of those mortgages that blew up on me," said Rosemary Williams, who hosted an event for NACA in the driveway of her Northside home.

Williams said NACA helped her stay in her home by restructuring her loan. She said the bank dropped her interest rate from 10 percent to 2 percent, which saved her $750 a month.

Mayor Alvin Brown and Congresswoman Corrine Brown participated in the announcement of NACA holding five days of counseling services in the city.

"What they need to bring is verification of income and bank statements and most importantly need to bring themselves because everything is free," said Bruce Marks, founder and CEO of NACA.

The organization reports that over the years, it has helped 7,500 local homeowners restructure their loans.

The doors open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. starting on Thursday and running through Monday of next week. The free counseling is being done at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
