Jacksonville's ABA Jacksonville Giants (http://www.jacksonvillegiants.com) are heading to Chicago, Illinois, today to face the Chicago Steam.  The winner will join the three other teams already heading to the ABA Final Four in St. Petersburg, Florida.  The two teams will play on Saturday.  Cheer on our local team and join their Facebook page.

Strange Thought of the Day – Even though I’m in favor of giving Blaine Gabbert more time for development and growth, who will finish with more NFL career starts – Gabbert or Miami’s David Garrard?

Jaguars Bite of the Day – Through Jaguars.com, general manager Gene Smith said the team is currently monitoring free agency and preparing for the draft.  The Jags could “address needs” for wide receiver and defensive end in free agency.  “This year there are more players available, and some of them may be available after the draft.  People are waiting to see what they can do after the draft,” Smith stated.  Even with the addition of Laurent Robinson, Jacksonville will further address wide receiver this season.

You Should Know – The 2012 NFL season opens with the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants hosting the Dallas Cowboys.  The NFL announced Tuesday the game will be played Wednesday, September 5, at MetLife Stadium.  It will air on NBC at 8:30 p.m.  Since 2002, the regular season has started on a Thursday.  In their past six meetings, the Giants have won five.

College Nugget – On Monday afternoon, the Alabama Board of Trustees approved a contract extension and raise for head coach Nick Saban.  That extends his contract through 2020, and it will pay him $5.2 million for the 2012 season.  The deal makes Saban, who has led the Crimson Tide to two national championships in the last three years, the highest-paid head football coach in the nation.  Oh, and Alabama’s athletic department has a financial budget in the neighborhood of $30 million per year.

Broadcasting Note – On ESPNU, John Hopkins and Virginia faced one another in lacrosse.  Now we know, helmet-to-helmet hits are not just in football.

Tweet of the last 24 hours – @richarddeitsch (Richard Deitsch, Sports Illustrated writer) “Steve Kerr said Anthony Davis is “automatic” as No. 1 in NBA Draft.  Says no consensus at No. 2 but guy he’s heard most is Thomas Robinson.”

Stat(s) of the Day – The Jaguars have seven picks in the 2012 NFL Draft.  The selections are 7th (first round), 38th (second), 70th (third), 101st (fourth), 142nd (fifth), 176th (sixth) and 228th (seventh).  The only other time Jacksonville has drafted seventh overall was in 2003.  The Jaguars went with quarterback Byron Leftwich.

Link of the Day – Sports Illustrated delivers a behind-the-scenes story of how Peyton Manning ended up a Denver Bronco.

Video of the Day – The world’s tallest basketball player dunked last week.  Paul Sturgess, a 7-foot-8 player for the Harlem Globetrotters, held on to the rim while his feet were on the ground.

Question of the Day – Can Rashean Mathis stay healthy enough to win the starting job over newly-acquired cornerback Aaron Ross?
