The Morning Miller On Sports For March 14, 2012

The ABA Southeastern Regional Playoffs will be held in Jacksonville, Florida, the weekend of March 17th and 18th.  The ABA Jacksonville Giants basketball team will host the event.  The first two games will be held at Jacksonville's newest high school, Atlantic Coast High School.  Its 1700 seat gym will accommodate many fans.  The final game will be held at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.  Its 12,000 seat capacity will ensure that everyone has a great seat to witness the action.  The teams competing in the Playoffs include the Jacksonville Giants, Gulf Coast Flash, Athens Razors, and the North Carolina Jaguars.  The first game Saturday will begin at 3:00 p.m. The Jacksonville Giants are schedule for Saturday 5:30 p.m.

You Should Know – Free agents Chad Henne and Laurent Robinson had scheduled visits with the Jaguars.  Henne, a former starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, also has interest from the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks.  After four starts in 2011, he separated his left shoulder and had surgery to repair the injury.  Robinson, going into his sixth NFL season, played last year for the Cowboys.  In 14 games for Dallas, he caught 54 passes for 858 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Jaguars Bite of the Day – The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed safety Dwight Lowery to a four-year deal late Tuesday night.  Along with Lowery, the Jags agreed to contracts with punter Nick Harris and linebacker Russell Allen.  Lowery, 26, spent his first three seasons with the New York Jets.  Signed initially by Jacksonville during last year’s free agent period, Lowery brought steadier play in the Jags’ secondary.  Last season, he started 11 games, recorded 28 tackles and intercepted two passes.

College Football Nugget – Florida’s Pro Day was held in Gainesville on Tuesday.  Four Gators worked out at Florida Field in front of NFL scouts from 24 teams and one head coach, the Jaguars’ Mike Mularkey.  Quarterback John Brantley, running back Chris Rainey, defensive tackle Jaye Howard and wide receiver Deonte Thompson performed a variety of drills.  It’s projected that no Gator will be drafted higher than the fourth round.  The University of Florida has a five-year streak of at least one player being chosen in the first round.

Broadcasting Note – Erin Andrews isn’t leaving ESPN just yet.  The major sports network could lose some high-profile broadcasters though.

Strange Thought of the Day – Through free agency, can the Jaguars fill needs at defensive end, wide receiver and cornerback?

Tweet of the last 24 hours – @KHaslam72 (Kevin Haslam, who was released by the Jaguars on Tuesday) “It’s been real J-Ville…appreciate the great experience.”

Stat(s) of the Day – The Jaguars signed linebacker Russell Allen to a three-year deal worth $6 million.  The Florida Times-Union reported he’ll make around $2.6 million in guarantees.

Link of the Day – The Sporting News ranks the NCAA Tournament teams from 1 to 68.  Remove Mississippi Valley State and Iona.

Video of the Day – From a couple nights ago, Portland Timbers fans sang the National Anthem in the team’s home opener.  That is a dedicated fan base.

Question of the Day – Will adding defensive end Mario Williams make Jags fans forget about Gene Smith’s first three free agent classes?
