A community is democratic only when the humblest
and weakest person can enjoy the highest civil,
economic, and social rights that the biggest and most
powerful possess.  Philip Randolph

An evening to Remember….

Education is the great equalizer, an equitable
educational system is needed to empower and engage
learning equally for all students. William Jackson

The opportunity to share in dialogue about the
progressive nature and transformative events of the
past 30 years. How public education has taken a turn
for the better or worse. The historical changes from
policies, desegregation, parental involvement and
faculty accountability. These elements have a profound
effect not just on Raines, but Duval County Public Schools
and the move from a traditional Southern mentality towards
educational diversity and inclusion.

Mayor Alvin Brown’s Learn2Earn Experience

Mayor Alvin Brown’s Learn2Earn Experience

I was proud and energized to be an instructor with
Mayor Alvin Brown’s Learn2Earn Experience.
L2E was a two week academic and social experience
promoting the value of higher education.

An immersion program attended by over 200 selected
high school students throughout Duval County Public
Schools, many of whom are seeking to be the first in
their family to go to college.

Opening their academic doors were Jacksonville
University and the University of North Florida.
During these engaging weeks students were provided
the opportunity to experience firsthand college life
experiences. Students lived in the dorms with their
chaperones, learned and participated in educational,
cultural and social events just as traditional college
students.

The Learn2Earn curriculum included:
My College Self, Career Research, Finding the Right Major,
Cash for College and College Fit and Selection.

Teaching Social Media safety, dangers of

realization from talking to teens in
attendance at Mayor Alvin Brown’s
Learn2Earn Experience at University of
North Florida; parents are not engaged as
they should be.
Summer is not the time to let the brain drain,
but to rejuvenate and invigorate. Parents don’t
let Social Media take the place of learning
opportunities and importantly family time.

Technology and Social Media:
Social Media is playing a part in the dynamics
of families so parents must be aware, cautious and
diligent in keeping Social Media content safe and
friendly. Technology has become so invasive that
children will carry their phones and tablets everywhere
texting, photographing, video recording and interact
with their friends even while participating in family
