Group Votes to Use City Incentives to Lure EverBank Downtown

Group Votes to Use City Incentives to Lure EverBank Downtown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The group in charge of bringing business downtown has passed a proposal that would potentially bring more than 1,000 jobs to the city's center.

The Jacksonville Economic Development Commission met this morning to discuss the $2.75 million in incentives for EverBank to move its office from the Southside to the Downtown Enterprise Zone.

The city would  also pay $420,000 from the Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund program, if EverBank adds 200 new jobs downtown.

According to the JEDC, the move would cost EverBank an estimated $26 million, and it would potentially receive an additional $2.75 million grant from the city to offset those costs.

EverBank has about 1,400 employees, JEDC Executive Director Ron Barton said in today's meeting.  Moving the business downtown could create about 200 new jobs, the JEDC indicated.

Jacksonville Office of Dixon Hughes Goodman Starts New Service

Dixon Hughes Goodman LLC has announced the launch of a new service that combines investigative tax reviews and case law aimed at helping businesses benefit from significant tax savings.

“We have begun offering strategic fixed asset studies for commercial property owners,” said James L Smith, Jr., tax partner with the Jacksonville office.  “It is a fairly complex undertaking that requires a deep review of capital costs not typically associated with tax advantages, but can result in significant tax savings.”

Fla. Home Inspectors Must Now Have State License

Fla. Home Inspectors Must Now Have State License

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Home inspector Dave Sorge was on the job today with another home inspection to complete.

Five years ago when he started "Inspect -it 1st," his industry was unregulated and tainted by shoddy home inspections. "The free market weeded out those guys that don't belong," he said.

And a new law that makes every inspector get a state license, will make it even more difficult for a bad inspector to remain in business, he said.  "Is licensing really the cure for substandard performance? We'll see," he said.

But the grandfathering of longtime inspectors, Sorge said, allows inspectors to be licensed with the most minimum qualifications.

"You could conceivably get a home inspector who has never performed a home inspection yet is qualified and licensed," said Sorge.
