Students at Fletcher Middle Participate in the Opening of the Beaches Parade

Four students from Fletcher Middle School participated in the Opening of the Beaches Parade with Friends of Jacksonville Animals (FOJA). The girls were asked to participate by the FOJA beach committee.

In addition to walking the dogs and hyping the crowd during the parade, the girls designed posters, flyers and decorations for the float. The theme was “Rock Star” and they gave the dogs names such as “Mick Wagger” and “Elvis Pawsley.” The girls continued volunteering at FOJA’s adoption event after the parade. Four of the dogs found potential homes thanks to students’ efforts.

This project began in December during a service-learning lesson in the classroom. During a unit on research and communication, the students studied and discussed pet overpopulation.

Ford F150 Under Investigation For Fuel Tank Fires

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A few weeks ago the F150 was recalled for an airbag problem, now it is being investigated for a potential fire problem.

It is the best selling vehicle in the U.S. for three decades, but this Office of Defects Investigation resume reveals the straps on the F 150 fuel tank can rust and break.

Kevin White of Whites Automotive showed us where the fuel tank is held to the vehicle by metal straps on a 2001 F150.

"These are the metal straps, and the problem is they are rusting," said White.

Federal investigators say there are reports of straps breaking, tanks collapsing and causing fires, but no injuries. Investigators want to know the frequency, severity and the scope of this problem.

"I haven't seen it unless the whole vehicle was rusty underneath from being use up North where they use salt on the roads," said White.

Mom Knows Best; Children Share Pearls of Wisdom

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Every mother has her words of wisdom. Always wear clean underwear. Act like a lady. Study first, play later. A mixture of practical advice and stern warnings, these verbal pearls are polished by years of repetition.

But, even when they seem to fall on deaf -- usually teenage -- ears, the maternal messages are received. Today, on Mother's Day, they are especially cherished. See, Mom? We're listening, after all.

Growing up, Stacie Sauers never rolled her eyes at her mother's advice. Well, not that she can recall. "There were things we didn't necessarily agree on, but I've always respected her," Sauers, a Pensacola resident, said of her mother, Charlotte Teston. "She's the best. I learned how to be a good mom and a good person from her."
